Consequences and reactions
In this ongoing series of work, the large-scale Consequences and reactions (2023) presents a found object, a worked surface from the University of Pretoria’s Fine Arts printmaking studio. Years of cutting, inking up and mess have coalesced into an evocative collaborative artwork. Over an extent of roughly 30 years, students have worked over these unintended gestures and the resultant, accidental object proposes a lively and affective space of making. I am seeking to connect to the dissipated energy of printmaking processes, and the changing circumstances of making and makers in South African art institutions. The found object functions as a connective or mediating device while these residues of creative work are captivating.
Shown in the group exhibition Stairways and Ruins at North West University Gallery from 17 July - 15 September 2023. A ViNCO research niche initiative, the exhibition was curated by Andrew Lamprecht (South African National Gallery). A 3D tour of the exhibition is available.
