Accidental Species
Ecological content was explored in a series of charcoal and ink drawings of burnt-out tyre debris, Accidental Species (2006-2008). I collected these artificial ‘specimens’ on an extensive road trip through South Africa, where the ubiquitous presence of shreds of rubber and wire pointed to the decline of diverse living creatures that were sighted more frequently in the past. The drawings presented static fragments as singular specimens (with a living presence as artworks) and mourn the loss of life as a result of expansion and progress.
A selection of drawings from this series was exhibited at the group shows Pigment on Paper, UCA gallery, Cape Town, A century in the service of knowledge: Visuality/Commentary (catalogue), University of Pretoria Centenary Exhibition and Out of context, Erdmann Contemporary, Cape Town.
